A medical trial patient was subjected to an injection of Cancer-killing Virus. The Virus has previously shown positive results on Animals. The treatment process is called oncolytic virus therapy. Oncolytic viruses are those viruses that are used to infect and destroy cancer cells. They infect and use the cell’s genetic machinery to replicate. The new Cancer-killing virus, known as ‘Vaxinia’ is designed to kill cancer cells but leave healthy cells untouched.
Imugene Limited, the company which developed Vaxinia (full name: CF33-hNIS VAXINIA) has stated that the treatment can also help prime peoples’ immune systems against cancer. The company is specialized in novel therapies that activate the immune system against cancer.
In the news release published in EurekAlert on May 17, it is mentioned that Imugene and City of Hope announce “the first patient dosed in Phase 1 trial to test Cancer-killing oncolytic virus against solid tumours. Experts hope that the virus amplifies body’s immune response against cancer.
In Phase 1 clinical trials, the virus will be injected to patients having solid tumours and have had at least two prior types of treatment. Reports added that the Virus is either injected directly into the tumour or into a vein.
